Why Getting Your First Client Feels So Hard
In the beginning, marketing can feel slow and uncomfortable. You are building confidence, testing methods, and wondering if this is actually going to work.
But here is the truth:
You do not need hundreds of clients.
You do not need thousands of followers.
You only need a handful of people to say yes.
Once you land your first client, everything shifts. Confidence grows. Momentum builds. Referrals begin.
The Easiest Way to Get Your First VA Client
Abbey walks through her favorite beginner strategy. Listen to the episode to find out!
Before you panic, this is not about awkward selling or turning every conversation into a pitch.
It is about:
- Telling your network what you are building
- Expanding your reach through real relationships
- Becoming top of mind when opportunities arise
- Building early confidence through conversation
Relationships are the foundation of a successful virtual assistant business.
This method does not require:
- A perfect website
- A flawless portfolio
- A massive social media presence
It requires action.

Hey, hey, you are tuned into Work From Anywhere with the Virtual Savvy, where you learn how to launch and grow your virtual assistant business because you deserve work that fits your life, not the other way around. All right, friend. Let's get started.
Hey. Hey, Abby. Ashley here. We're gonna talk about getting your first virtual assistant client. Actually, we're gonna talk about the easiest way to land your first virtual assistant client. So you may be listening to this as somebody who is still kind of thinking about becoming a virtual assistant, testing the water, seeing this, if this is really for you you may be out there trying to get clients already and you're struggling, right?
This is harder than I thought. Abby, what do I do No matter. Where you're at. I know that when it comes to marketing, we just get scared, to be honest. Most people are not natural born marketers. If you are, that is wonderful, right? Use that to your advantage, but. It's not actually a prerequisite to being a successful business owner, to being a successful va.
There are so many different personalities for CEOs, right? It's not just one personality type. We have had successful students who are just complete extroverts, and we have had the most introverted introverts who have had success building their virtual assistant businesses as well. So I just want you to know.
This doesn't have to be scary. As one of my previous business coaches told me, I'm like, I'm so overwhelmed. I dunno what to do with this. Abby. The best way to fight overwhelm is with a plan, so let's just make a plan. So. I'm gonna give you a plan here today. First I want to, before I go into the actual, you know, meat of today's lesson in the show before I actually tell you that secret to landing your first VA client, I wanna talk a little bit about marketing in general.
So when you're starting a virtual assistant business, it is. Definitely important that you market, and I honestly believe that it is never too early to start getting that marketing ball rolling. Right. If you would like, imagine with me there is just this giant boulder and a hill that you have to push it up, and that's what marketing feels like in the beginning.
As a small business owner, it is just tough. It is absolutely difficult. And you push and you push, and sometimes you're pushing so hard and it doesn't actually feel like the ball is moving at all. What am I doing right? But something really, really incredible happens when you hit the peak of that mountain.
And for most of us, the peak of that mountain comes with your first client. I call it the first client hump. And once you get there, once you actually reach that very first client, it's pretty magical because it could be a combinations of reasons why it happens, but I think one of the main reasons why it's so magical is because there's like a self-confidence, right?
There's a. This is real, right? Like somebody is actually gonna pay me to do this, and there's a confidence that comes with that. And a if I did this once, I can do it again, right? Another thing that happens when you get your first client is that you, you know, marketing is so much of just doing more of what works.
And so if you've tried several different methods to get clients and then you finally get a client with a particular method. Do more of that method, right? Like do more of what works in business. Mm-hmm. That is the tried and true way to grow. And so, , just know you may be at the bottom of the hill looking, oh my goodness, this looks really overwhelming.
You may maybe midway up the hill like, I've been pushing and pushing and nothing is happening. But do know that that moment is coming and once you actually get your first client, that's, that's the downward side, right? Like, like. It starts to build momentum, it starts to build up speed as that ball starts rolling down the hill.
And what's so beautiful guys, is that if you talk to any virtual assistant who has been in business for, you know, five, 10 years, you say, what is your number one source of clients? They're gonna tell you referrals. Right. And so do you have a massive amount of referrals right now?
No, you don't. Probably if you're just starting out. But as you continue to do great work for your clients, they're gonna tell other people about you, right? You can ask for referrals. You can say, Hey, I love working with you. Where do I find more people just like you? Because you are my dream client, right?
Who's not gonna share you with? They're friends if you say that. So, know that this, like pushing the ball up the hill doesn't have to last forever. In fact, I know several VAs who don't actually have to market their business at all anymore. Most virtual assistants can sell out their services with four to seven clients, guys.
You don't need a thousand people to say yes. You don't need hundreds of people to say yes. You need four people to say yes. And so let that be a big sigh of relief for you that this isn't, this isn't a forever thing. Your confidence will grow. You will get your first client and that ball will start growing with momentum.
It'll pick up speed and that referrals will come. But we gotta start where we're at with. Day one, telling people about your business. So I'm gonna spend the last few minutes here telling you you know, my number one method for new VAs to land virtual assistant clients, and this is something I like to call the friends and family outreach.
Now, if you heard that and you're like Abby I don't wanna sell to my friends and family, right? Like, trust me, I get you. The reason I never did MLM I never sold leggings or whatever oils is because I hated the idea of selling to my friends and family. I didn't want my friends and family to think that every time that I was talking to them, that I was just trying to sell them something.
Right? That's not what this is. So don't get scared, but it is really important that you tell your friends and family about your business, and here's why. Just like you, no. One small business owner, right? Think about it. You are not. No, I don't. Yes, you probably do. Right? You know, one person who is a real estate agent or who is a health coach or who is you know, owns a food truck or a mom and pop store or something, right?
Like, you know, one person most likely that owns a small business. And just like, you know, one person who is a small business owner, likely everyone you know, knows one person who's a small business owner. So just by telling your immediate network about what you're doing, it automatically extends your reach.
And we've had so many students do this method thinking, oh, nothing's probably gonna come with it. And then bam, their first client, right? Sometimes people do this, friends and family outreach, and nothing does happen, right? But. You gained confidence, right? There's that confidence is going to help you build your strength as you're pushing the ball up the hill.
And a lot of times it keeps you top of mind. So when Aunt Sally has, you know. A, a garage door guy over at her house and he is like, oh, sorry. You know, it took me a while to get this scheduled. We were really needing office help. Hey, I actually know somebody. Have you thought about hiring a virtual assistant?
You're gonna be top of mind, right? And so just know that this is a really, really important exercise no matter what you're doing. So with that said, what does that look like? It can be really simple, guys. This doesn't have to be, in fact, I would discourage it from being super cookie cutter, like this generic message.
Hi friend. How are you doing? Something exciting that is happening with me, da da da. No, like, it doesn't have to be that This can take the shape of an email. It can be a DM conversation, it can be a phone call, it can be a post on your Facebook page, right? Or a post on a friend's page, whatever. Whatever this ends up looking like.
Guys, try to just make it real, right? Reconnect with people. You will find over time that the best way to build your virtual assistant business is gonna be through relationships. And I'm sitting here telling you that as somebody. Honestly, who's not that good at relationships? Like, I hate to say that, that makes me sound like a terrible person, but just hear me out.
Like I am, I'm the girl that like, you text me, you are not a hundred percent sure that I'm gonna text back. Definitely not in a timely manner. Right? My friends know to pick up the phone and call me 'cause they're like, Abby, I need to talk. I'm like, yes, yes. I'm here. I'm here. I'm sorry. Right. And so. Know that even if you're not great at relationships, you can still be good at this, but , it's connecting with people, right?
And so literally just connect with a few people who love you and tell them what you're doing. Now we do have a personal outreach template and I will link to it in the show notes.
It's a template that you can use to actually reach out to friends and family. But I don't want this to act like a template, right? Like, you don't have to just copy, paste it, make it your own, make the, the conversation that you're having with people when you take them out for coffee or when you call 'em up on the phone, or if you send an email, that's okay too.
Now. Even though this is scary, guys, it is absolutely worth it. It is not the only way to get clients, but I would say it is the very best way to land your first virtual assistant client because no matter what. At a certain point, you can keep tweaking that logo. You can keep saying, oh, I'm still working on my packages or my branding.
I'm still doing this. I'm not ready. I'm not ready, I'm not ready. But at a certain point, you've gotta start pushing that ball. And I would beg to say that the sooner you do it, The better. If you can start pushing that marketing ball even before you're ready. You know what is the best way to get your button gear and finish your onboarding and get that contract ready is to have someone saying, Hey, I'd love to work with you.
Right? So even if you have to start marketing before you're a hundred percent ready. That's okay. Right? It's gonna get your butt in gear. So, that's all that I have for you today. I hope that you enjoyed this episode and make sure to download that free personal outreach template. I'll see you in the next episode.
